Fuji delivers as local contingent take on iconic circuit

The latest round of Fanatic GT World Challenge Asia powered by AWS and Japan Cup raced at Fuji International Speedway last weekend, which had a distinctive local flavour.

As previewed on this website last week, title contenders Jaxon Evans, Jayden Ojeda and rival team Triple Eight Race Engineering took on the classic circuit as part of a 49-car field.

Featuring 11 manufacturers including the likes of Callaway Competition’s final homologated Chevrolet Corvette Z07 GT3, the rare Lexus RCF GT3 and even the venerable Nissan GT-R GT3 (a couple) was represented.

Evans is completing a whirlwind season as Fuji acted as the perfect warm up for the centenary Crowdstrike 24 Hours of Spa this weekend.

Re-joining the Phantom Global Racing Porsche squad and co-driver JingZu Sun, Evans recovered from a spin in the opening race to be 19th. In the second event the pairing scored 10th in what is their best result of the season.

It was another reunion of sorts for Ojeda as he linked up with Craft-Bamboo Racing to partner Jeffrey Lee for the event at Fuji.

Ojeda and Lee scored 26th in the opener before improving to 19th in Race 2.

Prince Abu Bakar Ibrahim was joined by factory Mercedes-AMG gun Luca Stolz in the sole Triple Eight Race Engineering entry. Although the pair was unclassified in the first race, a masterful recovery led to fourth in the second event.

All international focus now moves to Belgium for the centenary Crowdstrike 24 Hours of Spa this weekend (June 26-30).
