Audi takes control of GT Festival Queensland Qualifying

Audi has continued its domination of GT World Australia powered by AWS at Queensland Raceway after taking out Pro-Am and Am Pole Positions in both Qualifying 1 and 2 on Saturday morning.

Claiming Pro-Am Pole Position in both sessions was the #888 Kelso Electrical Electrics Audi R8 LMS EVO II of Broc Feeney and Brad Schumacher, while their Team MPC stablemate Renee Gracie took out Am Pole in both sessions.

In Qualifying 1, it was Feeney who proved the fastest after a last-ditch effort saw the Queenslander pip fellow Audi R8 LMS EVO II pilot Alex Peroni in the final minutes of the session.

The Team BRM driver had managed to move into provisional pole for a short while before being replaced by Feeney thanks to his penultimate lap of 1:17.018, which remained unbeaten for the rest of the session.

Earlier in Qualifying, David Wall guided Wall Racing’s Lamborghini Huracan GT3 EVO II to the top of the time sheets with an epic lap to almost secure the marque’s first Pole Position in the category before Feeney nabbed it from him later in the session.

It was a similar story for Schumacher in Qualifying 2 as the New South Welshman stole Pole Position from Team BRM’s Mark Rosser on his final flying lap.

The session ended up going right down to the wire with three different drivers replacing each other on Pole as the chequered flag was waved - Tim Miles in the Dayle ITM/Team MPC Audi R8 LMS EVO II losing top spot to Rosser by half a tenth.

Rosser was on Pole for a total of six seconds before Schumacher pipped him for Pole by three tenths on his final flyer to make it two Pole Positions for the #888 Audi.

In the Am Class, Gracie was too good for the rest of the class as she comfortably took out top spot in Qualifying 1 by more than one second over Theo Koundouris in the Supabarn Supermarkets/Tigani Motorsport Mercedes-AMG GT3 EVO.

She then repeated her efforts in Qualifying 2, this time finishing eight tenths faster than Koundouris' teammate James Koundouris.

Team MPC’s stronghold over the competition in Qualifying was also present in the Trophy Class as their KFC Audi R8 LMS of Paul Stokell and Gary Higgon took Pole in both Qualifying sessions - Stokell edging out class rival Luke Youlden of Tigani Motorsport by just over one hundredth of a second.

Higgon then produced the same result over Youlden’s teammate Nathan Halstead by three tenths in Qualifying 2.

GT World Challenge Australia powered by AWS holds Race 1 today at 1:45pm AEST.
